In the past, board games available here were broadly from 3 categories - the traditional game like International Chess, Chiness Chess, Go, etc; the Chinese-based Animal Chess, Infantry Chess etc; and the English-based games like Monopoly, Cluedo, Risk & Scrabble. Most of them are either very abstract & strategic, or very dice based & light. On the other hand, most of the designer board games have strong theme and strategic/ tactical elements. Even if dice is used, luck is not dominant but players' actions largely determine the game outcome. That's why the designer board games have gained a foothold in the board game industry.
